Then I remembered I had my wife's old 78 musicmaster in the cupboard. I have been toying with the idea of trading some gear in and grabbing a lighter 4 string (currently play a 5er). It was either Sonic Blue or Daphne w non matching headstock. I've recently gotten into playing again, my current gigging bass is a little too heavy and is giving me some back issues. And hopefully someone will come along and correct me if I am wrong but I seem to remember seeing that the pickups in Musicmaster/Bronco basses were the same as the stratocaster with a cover over them to hide the fact it was a 6 pole pickup. He hadn't a clue about modding or anything, so it was definitely a stock pup. The pickup in the picture is a P-bass split pickup with 8 poles. My dad bought it in the 70s and never really used it. Mine had a regular 4 pole PUP under the cover. ![]() Don't go changing the electronics or hardware - these little basses sound fantastic stock and you will not make it sound any better by sticking a ccrazy bridge on it or swapping out the p/up.you will find that that pickup is a flat-pole Mustang guitar pickup - that's why it has the all-black pickup cover - to hide the six poles - and is the reason for the Musicmaster's unique bassy tone. Originally, the Fender Musicmaster Bass and Amp were thought to be an affordable set up for students who wanted to learn the trade.
